Leadership is defined as the ability to “lead”, organize, or influence a group of individuals. We see many examples of leadership in our day to day lives. Captains, coaches, teachers, principals, even my grandma are some of the people I would consider to be leaders. But what does being a leader really mean? What does it entail?
For me, being a leader means being able to bring people together. Whether it’s being captain of your sports team or just the leader of a group project, leadership is vital to ensuring the success of your group. To be a great leader however doesn't just mean bossing people around and telling them what to do. To be a great leader, you need to have people be able to trust you to lead them in the right direction. Being a leader, in my opinion, means being able to take on the responsibility of organizing, making decisions, etc. Being a leader means having patience and empathy for your group, it means being able to communicate and find solutions with your team. Being a leader also means being able to uplift and empower your groups when times are tough, and being able to motivate them into doing their best. To be a leader, you need to not only know how to lead, but how to form a connection with your team.
I’ve been in a leadership position many times in my life, but the one thing not many people think about is how your team perceives you as a leader. As a leader I strive for my group to view me not only as someone capable, smart, and responsible enough to bring us to our goal, but as someone who is compassionate and understanding as well. I hope that I was able to lead by example and show my team that hard work and dedication are key to success. I also hope that not only my group, but others as well, see how passionate and proud I am of our group. In conclusion, I hope that other students see that leadership is not just a title, but a job that requires responsibility, compassion, and dedication. When I lead, I do so with pride and excitement for the future, and with the success of the group as my main goal.
